In 1900, General Electric established the first laboratory in US industry dedicated to scientific research. This partnership between GE and the residents of Schenectady resulted in a rich history of innovations.

Few knew in 1927 that television signals were being received at a home near Ellis Hospital belonging to Dr. Ernst W. Alexanderson. By May 1928 GE began regular TV broadcasting and on September 11,1928 television's first drama,The Queen's Messenger, was broadcast from Schenectady's WGY. On May 22, 1930 the general public was invited to experience television in historic Proctors Theater as it was projected onto a 7 foot screen. In 1940, the first television network was established with the relay of a television broadcast from New York City to WRGB in Schenectady, NY.

Even today NBC's "Must See TV" tips their hat to Schenectady making it the home town of Grace Adler, on the popular show, Will & Grace.
